« The Shape of Things to Come »: The politics of planning new hospitals in inter war England and France
This paper will consider a number of major hospital building projects launched in the early 1930s in urban England and France. It will explore the plans to finance these ventures which, in England, drew on existing hospital funding models while in France they relied on a new alliance between the hospital authorities, the universities, local and national government. It will argue that while the desire to create state of the art hospitals reflected an international movement, little consensus existed on what should be built, where, by whom or how it should be financed.
