Le Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique Apparences, Corps et Sociétés ACORSO place au cœur de son projet une réflexion sur la construction des identités, et sur le rôle qu’y ont tenu et y tiennent les apparences individuelles et collectives, depuis cinq siècles.

Il développe cette réflexion à partir de problématiques qui sont à la croisée de l’histoire de la culture matérielle et des techniques, du corps et du genre. Son activité est résolument pluridisciplinaire, associant notamment histoire, ethnographie, sociologie, sciences de l’art, sciences de la communication.

Il rapproche les sources en interrogeant, à côté des textes ou des images, les objets conservés dans les musées ou les collections privées, en questionnant leur matérialité. Une de ses caractéristiques fondamentales est de reposer sur une étroite collaboration entre centres de recherche universitaires et musées (nationaux, de société, d’industrie, etc.).

Le GIS met en réseau les chercheurs d’Europe, d’Amérique  et des autres continents, et fédère actuellement 34 institutions. Il est attentif à la diversité des questions sociétales qui mettent en jeu apparences et identités ; à la diversité des méthodes et des approches.

Le GIS développe le Blog ACORSO https://acorso.hypotheses.org/, destiné à en relayer les activités et mène une veille scientifique sur l’histoire et l’anthropologie du vêtement, de la mode et des apparences dans les sociétés occidentales, de la Renaissance à nos jours. Le Blog ACORSO vise concrètement à informer de l’activité du GIS, à développer une information constamment actualisée sur les programmes de recherche, les manifestations scientifiques, les publications et la littérature grise.

Le GIS Apparences, corps et sociétés est hébergé par l’Université Rennes 2 / CERHIO (Centre de Recherches Historiques de l’Ouest) – UMR CNRS 6258 et coordonné par Jean-Pierre Lerhuillier, assisté d’un comité directeur de sept membres.

The RIG Appearances, Bodies, and Societies

ACORSO

At the heart of the Research Interest Group (RIG) Appearances, Bodies, and Societies  projects is a reflection on the construction of identities, and the role that they have played in over five centuries of individual and collective appearances.

The RIG strives to develop an analysis at the crossroads of material culture, the history of the body, and gender history. The group’s activities are multidisciplinary, combining history, ethnography, sociology, art history, and communications studies.

The RIG aims to bring together textual and visual sources with objects from museums and private collection, while questioning their materiality. One of its fundamental aims is to foster close collaboration between research centers and museums (public and private).

The RIG brings together researchers from Europe, the Americas, and other continents, and currently  rally together 34 partners. It is attentive to the diversity of societal issues that involve appearances and identities as well as to the diversity of methods and approaches

Developed by the RIG Appearances, Bodies, and Societies, the blog ACORSO https://acorso.hypotheses.org/ seeks to relay the RIG’s activities and monitor the scientific community for information regarding the history and anthropology of fashion and appearances in Western society, from the Renaissance to the present. The blog ACORSO aims to give some information about RIG’s activities, research programs, scientific events, publications and scientific literature.

The RIG Appearances, Bodies, and Society is hosted by the University of Rennes 2 / CERHIO (Western History Research Center) – UMR CNRS 6258, the network is coordinated by Jean-Pierre Lethuillier, chair of a Planning Group of seven members.
